Orthodox
Icons The icons are images which, according to St John Damascene, hide in themselves a mystery and, like a sacrament, carry divine energy and grace. The religious canons impose strict rules on the artistic representation and allow no kind of personal interpretation. This is why the images are very stylised but they nevertheless radiate spiritual force, mysticism and poetry. The icons are objects of veneration and presuppose a spiritual approach both during their creation and during their contemplation. St Luc the evangelist is considered to be the first icon painter for his representation of Virgin Mary. The painters of Bulgarian icons observe the ancient traditions of orthodox art. Anita and George NENCHEV are well-known artists who have made a number of exhibitions in Bulgaria. They explore the possibilities of various natural materials like wood and stone as well as household items as carriers of holy images. |
